Gluten-free diets are all the rage given Novak Djokovic‘s success in 2011. Learn about the benefits and also some pitfalls to avoid.
Prior to reaching the 2010 US Open final, Novak Djokovic found out he had coeliac disease, which affects about one in 100 people. It means he is intolerant to gluten found in many grains.
Four months ago, the Serbian revealed his secret.
Only then did his ATP World Tour rivals fully realise his success and subsequent rise to No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings was not just down to his agility, baseline aggression and strong serve, but to his diet.
Under the guidance of his nutrionist, Igor Cetojevic, Djokovic was steered away from wheat, barley and rye. He went onto compile a 41-0 start to the 2011 season.
Speaking in April, Djokovic admitted, “He’s done a great job in changing my diet after we established I am allergic to some food ingredients, like gluten. It means I can’t eat stuff like pizza, pasta and bread. I have lost some weight but it’s only helped me because my movement is much sharper now and I feel great physically.”

Coeliac Disease is a generic disorder where the body mistakenly produces antibodies which starts to damage its own body tissues. Celiac (coeliac) disease can effect children and adults. People with the disease should and need to avoid eating wheat and grain based food where large traces of gluten are found. The gluten sets off an autoimmune reaction that causes destruction of the villi in the small intestine. The antibodies produced to attack the gluten also attack the intestine, causing damage and illness. People diagnosed need to adhereto a strict gluten-free diet which can dramatically improve the patient’s condition over time.
If found diagnosed with coeliac disease and not treated properly, some serious health issues may arise.
What are the symptoms of celiac disease?
Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, weakness, malnutrition, and other gastrointestinal problems. In children, the symptoms may include failure to thrive (an inability to grow and put on weight), irritability, an inability to concentrate, diarrhea and bloating.
Make no mistake. If Coeliac Disease is not treated/ diagnosed or managed correctly can be life threatening. Those who go untreated are asking for long term problems with their health. The lining of the bowel will continue to become inflamed and over time will deteriorate. This is referred to as villous atrophy. There is also a small, but real, increased risk of certain forms of cancer such as lymphoma of the small bowel.
